Pilot whale dies with 80 plastic bags in stomach

written by oceanographic staff

A pilot whale found by conservationists in Thailand has died with 80 plastic bags in its stomach.

A team of helpers nursed the young male for five days, before it died.

The whale, found alive in a canal in Songkhla province, vomited five bags during the rescue attempt.

The ingested bags weighed approximately 8kg – enough to prevent the whale from digesting enough nutritional food, reports suggest.

Last month the Thai government announced it was considering implementing a levy on plastic bags in a bid to curb usage.
