While it is illegal to target and catch sharks, fishing is not the only threat they face. Habitat destruction poses a major challenge for numerous species. The mangroves are a critical habitat for species above and below the surface – 90% of marine organisms, including juvenile reef fish, conch, lobster and lemon sharks spend at least part of their life here. In the spring, on the full moon high tides, pregnant female lemon sharks return to the mangroves of Bimini to give birth in the same area they were born.
