Do Blue: How water heals us – And how we protect what we love

Water holds a power and fascination for so many of us - a place of awe, flow and calm. Now, science is confirming what ocean lovers have always instinctively felt: being in or near water is profoundly good for our health.

In this special Ocean Talks conversation, celebrating the publication of their new book Do Blue: Water, waves and wellbeing, Nick Hounsfield and Abby Richardson explore the growing science behind blue health and, importantly, the ripple effect that happens when personal healing becomes planetary care.

Nick Hounsfield is the founder of The Wave, a world-first inland surfing destination in Bristol, which he created to bring the health and wellbeing benefits of water to more people. A lifelong surfer and former osteopath, Nick was driven to his creation after recognising the growing impact of stress, disconnection and inactivity on modern health. Following a major stroke in 2020, much of his recovery took place in the water – further cementing his belief in the power of blue spaces to heal, build resilience and foster community.

Abby Richardson is a communications consultant and passionate advocate for cold-water swimming and community connection. Part of The Wave journey from the very beginning, she leads its Impact Programme, widening access to surfing and blue health. Once fearful of water, Abby now champions helping people find their own relationship with blue space – whatever their level of confidence.
