the purpose
Photography plays a critical role in the fight for a healthier ocean – both as a source of inspiration and as a tool to inform. The Ocean Photography Awards – and this book – are an extension of Oceanographic Magazine’s values: harnessing image-driven storytelling to connect with people – both ocean goers and non-ocean-goers – around the world. Some of the images within Volume I will make you scream with anger, others will fill your heart with joy.

The Community Choice Award. Awarded to the most popular submission, as voted for by the public. A shortlist of five photographs, chosen by the judging panel, was featured on the Ocean Photography Awards.

The Collective Portfolio Award. Awarded to the photographer who showcases a long-held commitment to ocean conservation through a striking body of work – strong enough to take up a one-year residency as a member of the SeaLegacy Collective, alongside the judging panel.
