Finalist The Ocean Unseen: Hidden Worlds

During a coral spawning night dive, a Christmas tree worm releases a stream of tiny eggs from the coral surface where it lives. Christmas tree worms are tube-dwelling marine worms that use colourful feeding crowns to capture plankton from the water. This image captures a brief reproductive event that takes place across coral reefs after dark.

Lale Alev Ozten Low is an underwater photographer and naturalist living on the island of Bonaire. Born and raised in Turkey, she discovered her love for the sea as a child in the Mediterranean, although growing up in Ankara meant water was mostly a summer affair. After spending her adult years working in technology in the USA, she moved with her husband to Bonaire in 2014 and made the island our home. She briefly worked in the dive industry before becoming a fish ID citizen scientist, which naturally led her to underwater photography. She feels incredibly fortunate to spend her days (or nights) underwater, observing fish, corals, creatures and their fascinating behaviour.
