Tanya Houppermans The Bahamas
Scientists conduct an ultrasound on a female tiger shark off the coast of Grand Bahama. “She was discovered to be pregnant, and a groundbreaking device called a birth tag was inserted into her uterus which does not harm the mother or pups,” explains Houppermans. “When the shark gives birth, the tag will be expelled with the pups. It then signals to a satellite, alerting the scientists to the time and location of the birth. Once the birth tag was in place, the shark was measured, the hooks removed, and she was quickly released unharmed.”
