Birds on the Brink:
African penguins are facing an unprecedented decline; their numbers have dropped by 97 per cent in the last century. Francesca Page follows their plight and finds a population struggling to compete for food, space and attention in a society ignorant of how close these beloved birds are to extinction.
The Island of Dragons:
On Socotra, Henley Spiers finds rich reefs but few sharks or turtles. Fishermen face rising competition and encroaching technology, leaving the island’s fragile balance between tradition and conservation uncertain.
Raising the Odds
On the northern coast of Cornwall, the Padstow Lobster Hatchery has been working to sustain one of the UK’s most iconic and valuable marine species. Lewis Jefferies travelled to their base to find out how their efforts are working out, just over a quarter of a century after they first opened their doors.
There and back, again?
Southern right whales are considered critically endangered under the EPBC Act and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act in Australia. With over 150m000 whales killed between 1790 and 1980 worldwide, the recovery of such a vulnerable species has been slow, and the Australian population is under threat now more than ever.
A Return to the Blue Planet
Some 25 years after the original and 10 years on from its sequel, the BBC’s Blue Planet III lands for a new audience. But can advances in technology and an evolution in storytelling build a whole new connection for audiences of today? And crucially, will Blue Planet III help us fall in love with an ocean that needs us more than ever?
