A New Zealand fur seal tears apart a rough skate in the waters of New Zealand, while seabirds gather for the scraps. Unable to swallow such large prey whole, the seal throws the skate repeatedly to break it into smaller pieces. Photographed from a kayak, this scene reveals the feeding strategy of a powerful predator and the chain of life that follows every meal.

Allan Cronin has worked on the ocean for 10 years, with his first role on the ocean being with the sperm whales in Kaikoura, NZ. He spent 6 years getting to know the subtleties of the wildlife here. He loves how every day, even in the same stretch of water, it´s different and reveals little snippets of its secrets over time. Capturing the ocean's inhabitants in action has been his passionate goal for the last 7 years.
