Tamara Stubbs Antarctica
During a Weddell Sea Expedition in Antarctica, crabeater seals gathered around the icebreaker S.A. Agulhas II after the ship became surrounded by multi-year sea ice. Resting in the sheltered shade of the vessel, the seals floated motionless in the water, occasionally lifting their heads to breathe. This behaviour was observed only once during the expedition. Crabeater seals are highly adapted to life in Antarctic pack ice, using sea ice as a platform for resting, breeding and avoiding predators.
