A group of 11 gunnels gathers in a colourful cluster beneath the waters of Seattle. Although gunnels are a common species in the region, finding so many together in a tightly packed group with such varied colours is unusual. Their bright patterns stand out against the darker waters typical of Pacific Northwest diving. This image highlights the unexpected beauty found in familiar species.

Ariel “the little BRRmaid” is an award winning underwater photographer based in Seattle, WA. She began scuba diving in Hawaii at age 11 and now spends her time in the cold, dark waters of the Pacific Northwest. Ariel dives year round, rain, snow, or (rarely) shine, capturing the unique and incredible critters that live here. If you ask, she’ll passionately argue why cold water diving beats tropical diving any day. Until then, Ariel runs local and international photography workshops while continuing to expand her own portfolio… underwater and on land!
