Finalist Human Connection Award: People & Planet Ocean

Lewis Jefferies Cornwall, UK

50.091968° N -5.202633° W

An Atlantic puffin swims past an underwater viewing window at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Cornwall. In 2024, the sanctuary became the first place in the UK to provide permanent care for rescued puffins that could not survive if returned to the wild. The underwater habitat allows visitors to observe behaviours rarely seen above the surface, helping to build a greater understanding of these vulnerable seabirds and the challenges they face in the wild.

Lewis Jefferies is a cameraman, photojournalist and filmmaker who doesn't just capture the natural world - he strives to make people care about it. Specialising in underwater and drone imagery, he brings rare perspectives from the ocean floor to the landscapes above, working closely with scientists and conservationists to tell stories at the intersection of wildlife and people - communicating environmental issues and celebrating conservation success. That curiosity was forged at just 13 years old, on a scuba diving course that sparked a fascination with the underwater world that still drives him today - and a belief that great storytelling can move people to act.
