A critically endangered smoothnose wedgefish demonstrates the cost of bycatch. “I had the privilege of joining fishers as part of the ‘Kebersamaan Untuk Lautan’ NGO project in Sumatra. During my time on the water, I witnessed the retrieval of hundreds of metres of gillnets, revealing a shocking amount of shark and ray bycatch,” explains Page. “From the depths emerged a creature rarely seen by divers, the critically endangered smoothnose wedgefish. As it was hoisted towards the boat, I was given seconds to capture the shot and document a powerful image in the fight to save this critically endangered species from extinction.”
